The exam is required of anyone attempting to obtain citizenship, permanent residency or a green card before your scheduled interview, otherwise your case may be delayed. It required for accordance with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  Furthermore, all employers who hire employees originating from another country require immigration physicals.

Each evaluation includes an examination performed according to the medical guidelines established by the USCIS and Centers for Disease Control. Be prepared to have a full physical examination of the body, including but not limited to the eyes, ears, nose, throat, extremities, heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, skin, and external genitalia. A mental evaluation will also be conducted.

For your visit, please bring all necessary paperwork, including:

  • Passport or I.D. card, travel document
  • Any medical history you may have:
  • Vaccination history, laboratory work and X-rays
  • Form I-693

NOTE: Form I-693 will be filled out in-part by you, and in-part by your doctor. It’s important that you only sign the form upon instruction from your civil surgeon, who will seal the form and all other necessary paperwork in an envelope. Either you or your authorized physician will need to send this envelope sealed and unopened to USCIS.

There are a few medical factors that, upon your medical examination, may deem your immigration case inadmissible:

  • Communicable disease of public health significance (like HIV or TB)
  • Lack of required vaccinations (for immigrant visa applicants)
  • Physical or mental disorders with harmful behavior
  • Drug abuse or addiction

NOTE: It is possible for your inadmissible case to become admissible upon completion of treatment for the condition. In some instances, you can also apply for a waiver to overcome the inadmissibility.

You are responsible for paying all fees or costs associated with the examination in full. Depending on the results of your exam, you may also have to have further testing.
